Driver arrested after police find stolen gun in his vehicle

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested after a stolen firearm was recovered during a traffic stop conducted by CPD officers on Friday evening.

At approximately 7:53 p.m., CPD officers stopped a vehicle for a minor violation near the 1900 block of Chestnut Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle, Dustin S. Hardy, 40, of Columbus and determined that his driver’s license was suspended. Hardy was taken into custody and officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located a loaded handgun that was recently stolen from a parked vehicle in Columbus, Harris said.

Hardy was transported to the
Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of driving while suspended with a prior conviction, possession of a handgun without a license and theft of a firearm, Harris said.
