Late first-half run sends Jets past Indians

Madelyn Poe

HOPE — It took a while for Hauser to get going after his slow start Thursday night against Milan, but once the Jets got going, it was hard for the Indians to stop them.

Hauser went on a 19-1 run to close out the first half, and it was smooth sailing in the second half for the Jets, who are off to their best start since the 2016-17 season after a 65-40 girls basketball victory.

“It’s a great team this year. We feed off each other. No one is downing each other. We help raise each other,” Hauser junior Kyliegh Parrott said. “Tonight, I think we showed real good team chemistry. We all shared the ball tonight, and we all contributed.”

It was a tale of two halves for the Jets (3-0) until their late first-half run. But Hauser did what it needed to do to remain perfect or the season.

“The first half wasn’t the prettiest. We didn’t play the best. We didn’t execute the best. I thought offensively and defensively, we didn’t do what we wanted to do,” Hauser coach Chad Evans said. “We made some adjustments at halftime. We came out in the second half, and that third quarter was big for us with the adjustments. That’s one thing I give credit to the kids. We can make adjustments, and they can buy into it, which is nice to have.”

Milan (0-4) took advantage of its size in the first quarter and fed the ball inside the paint. That allowed the Indians to grab a 13-12 advantage after the first quarter. Milan then went inside once again, and Audrey Schmidt dropped in a couple buckets to increase the lead to 17-12.

Once the Jets were able to settle down, they picked up the intensity and went on the 19-1 run to lead 33-20 at the break. Madelyn Poe scored 11 of the points during the run and finished the first half with 16.

Hauser was able to hold its lead by hitting its shots from the perimeter to help grow the lead to 53-34 heading into the fourth. The Jets emptied their bench during the fourth quarter to finish out the game.

Parrott hit two 3s during that third quarter run.

“I hit that (first) one and I felt it,” Parrott said. “I felt like I was going to make these, and I was just feeling it tonight.”

Poe finished with game-high 26 points to lead the Jets. Parrott had 14, including three 3-pointers, while Kenze Bostic and Adrianna Musillami had six apiece and Tanna Tatlock added four.

“Tanna and Kenze played real well tonight,” Evans said. “They didn’t get a lot points, but they did a lot of little things, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
