IUPUC and Ivy Tech Community College-Columbus are hoping to see a return to more traditional graduation ceremonies in the new year.

Per a 2022 event schedule shared at a recent board meeting, Ivy Tech’s tentative plan for commencement is to have it on Saturday, May 14 at Columbus North High School.

“We are looking at a return to our traditional form,” said Ivy Tech Chancellor Steven Combs.

The college held a virtual ceremony via its YouTube channel in both 2020 and 2021. In the latter year, the college also hosted an in-person “Grad Fest” event for graduates and guests in front of Poling Hall. According to school officials, the drop-in event provided opportunities for students to pick up items such as diploma covers, take pictures in their caps and gowns, and celebrate with faculty and staff.

IUPUC, which is also located on the Airpark campus, held an in-person ceremony in 2021, but attendance was limited to graduates only. A virtual option was available for guests.

Per the college’s graduation website, 2022 commencement is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at IUPUC, and guests will be allowed to attend. Tickets are not required.

“Our graduates will join the ranks of over 7,500 alumni from our IUPUC campus and be recognized for their accomplishments at the 52nd Commencement Celebration on May 12, 2022,” said Vice Chancellor and Dean Reinhold Hill in an official statement. “We are proud that they may impact the communities of south central Indiana and beyond—not just as better skilled employees, but also as more thoughtful, reflective, and committed citizens.”

Students also have the option to participate in commencement at IUPUI or attend both ceremonies, though only doctoral students’ names will be read at the IUPUI ceremony.

Individual recognition by name will take place at the IUPUC ceremony, and diploma covers will be given to graduates.
