Hit-and-run suspect cancels job interview

Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramanian

A suspect charged with the hit-and-run death of a Columbus teen last summer will not be leaving the state this week for a job interview.

Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramanian, 25, was arrested following the Aug. 30 death of 16-year-old Columbus East High School student Lily J. Streeval. He’s accused of attempting to drive around a stopped school bus with warning lights flashing and arm signal extended. The victim was struck as she was attempting to board the bus, according to court documents.

Formal charges filed against the defendant include leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or catastrophic injury, a Level 4 felony, and passing a school bus when arm signal is extended causing death, a Level 5 felony.

On Jan. 3, defense attorney Brittney Newland asked Bartholomew Circuit Court Judge Kelly Benjamin for permission for Subramanian to fly 370 miles from Columbus to a job interview in Clinton, Iowa.

But the judge required proof the Iowa firm was notified about his felony charges and that they were still willing to pay his airfare. Benjamin also required Subramanian to supply a list of Indiana companies with whom he had sought employment.

On Monday, the court received notification that the job interview had been canceled, and the defendant was not leaving Bartholomew County.

Tentative court dates for Subramanian include a change of plea hearing or pre-trial conference on March 21 at 10:30 a.m., as well as a jury trial on April 19 at 8:30 a.m.
