Houchin to seek 9th District congressional seat

SALEM — State Sen. Erin Houchin, R-Salem, has announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for Indiana’s 9th congressional district.

The district currently includes a slice of southern Bartholomew County, as well as all of Jackson, Jennings, Brown and Decatur counties, after Indiana Republicans redrew and approved new district lines last year.

Houchin currently represents State Senate District 47, which includes Crawford, Orange, Harrison, Perry and Washington counties and the eastern portion of Dubois County. She was first elected in 2014.

Houchin is seeking the seat held by Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, R-Indiana, who announced Wednesday that he will not seek a fourth term in Congress. Hollingsworth, 38, a Tennessee native, has represented Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District since taking office in 2017.
