The United Way of Bartholomew County is honoring the legacy of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., by participating in the annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service today.

A total of 21 volunteers will help three agencies with a variety of tasks, according to organizers.

“The relatively small number of volunteers at each site/shift, with masks and social distancing capabilities, meant we felt we could continue to safely do the event,” said Magen Pillar, United Way’s communications manager.

United Way of Bartholomew County annually organizes and participates locally in the national King Day of Service. On this day, Americans honor the civil rights leader, killed in 1968, through service projects that strengthen our community and empower individuals.

In planning the day, organizers invited county residents to celebrate King’s legacy by participating in volunteer projects for United Way’s mission and certified partners.

Volunteer opportunities with certified United Way agencies are available year-round, and are as varied as delivering meals to mentoring youth. Many nonprofit and social service organizations post their volunteer needs through the United Way website at uwbarthco.org.

“The national MLK Day of Service helps embody the giving spirit Dr. King showed throughout his life,” said Alicia Monroe, Volunteer Action Center director. “United Way and the Volunteer Action Center seek to honor our community and this national event by organizing and encouraging volunteerism that helps make Bartholomew County a better place to live.”
