Roy E. Kelly

COLUMBUS

Roy E. Kelly, 74, of Columbus, passed away at 8:10 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2022 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Roy was born on September 15, 1947, in Seymour, Indiana, the son of Roy Howard and Margie Juaneva Harris Kelly. On May 10, 1980, he married Kelly Wiggins. Mr. Kelly was retired, but had worked as a project estimator for general contractors throughout his career. He started every morning early, eager to get the day going, as he loved and enjoyed life. Roy was a true gentleman, had a tender soul and was a kind-hearted man. He was a practical joker with a great sense of humor. Roy will be remembered as a loving husband who looked forward to summer cook-outs, surrounded by family. Besides being an avid hunter, Roy was also known as the “Great Guru”. This nickname came from his knowledge of so many different subjects and in so many different areas. (And what he didn’t know, he simply made up a very convincing story.) His faith in God was established early in his life, being raised in the Nazarene Church. He could play the piano like no other. Roy will be deeply missed by those that knew him best. Survivors include his wife, Kelly; daughters, Shanyn (Dennis) Murphy, Kathryn McBride, Rory Kelly, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Ethan (Kelby Bennett) Murphy, Nash Murphy, Larkyn McBride; sisters, Pat (Vic) Armstrong of Hartsville, Becky (Shannon) Richardson of Columbus; brother, Dell (Debbie) Kelly of Newbern; mother-in-law, Diana Settle, of Columbus; along with his in-laws and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Glenn Kelly. A private funeral service for the family was held at the Garland Brook Mausoleum Chapel. Military honors were presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Entombment took place at the Garland Brook Mausoleum. A celebration of life will be planned, in his honor, at a later date at the convenience at his family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
