Flames 14U AA team takes runner-up in Buckeye Classic

The Columbus Flames 14U AA team finished runner-up in last weekend’s Buckeye Classic Hockey Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus Flames 14U AA team bounced back from losses in its first two games to finish second in last weekend’s Buckeye Classic Hockey Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

The Flames fell to the Miami Redhawks 2-1 and Sylvania North Stars 4-3. Westin Davis, Wyatt Warner, Drew Weed and Carson King scored the goals, with assists credited to River Degner, Cole Finney, Eddie Aranda, Leif Nelson and Weed.

The Flames then defeated the Buffalo (New York) Saints 6-1 with two goals by Davis and one each by Warner, Finney, Weed and Will Jamerson. Nelson and Eddie Aranda each had two assists and Warner, King, Degner and Davis each had one.

In the semifinals, the Flames beat top-seeded Miami Redhawks 2-1 in overtime. Degner was assisted by Carson King in regulation, and Aranda scored the overtime goal, assisted by Nelson and Warner.

The championship game with Sylvania North Stars also went to overtime tied 1-1, with Flames Jamerson scoring off an assist by Nelson. After a scoreless five-minute, four-vs.-four overtime period, which ended in another stalemate, two of Sylvania’s three skaters netted goals, while the Flames were shut out.

Icemen fall to Stars Red

Columbus Icemen fell to South Stars Red 3-2 on a last-second goal in overtime. Will Kushner and Nate Balasia each scored one goal, and John Merritt and Alex Clark each had one assist for the Icemen. Ben Blanz was in net.

Columbus Flames Peewee B played in the Gateway Cup tourney in St Louis and tied Niles Ranger 4-4, beat Kankakee Coyotes 11-1, fell to Naperville Sabres 4-2 and Arctic Jr Fury 2-0. Ayden Richardson led the team with six goals and two assists. Cooper Ross netted two goals and three assists; Lilli Donica and Dana Thomas each recorded two goals and two assists; Bryson Moore had two goals and one assist; Canyon Long scored two goals; Hudson Beckom added one goal; Preston Bell, Colby Payne and Jack Treesh all had two assists and Noah Doig and Gabe Marsh each added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net.

Squirt Flames A fell to the Blue Jackets 3-2 and 6-2. Max Perez scored two goals, Keaton Grube had one goal and one assist, Carter Harris scored one goal and Thomas King and Bentley Hampton each added one assist. Caydon Long was in net.

Squirt Flames B played the Hawks twice, winning 3-2 and falling 2-1 and lost to the Ice Dragons 4-2 and the Lightning 3-2. Thomas Degner netted four goals and one assist, Clare Neff scored two goals, Jonah Oliphant had one goal and one assist and Carter Zortman added one goal, Knox Coen was in net.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia competes

Club Olympia swimmers that met the tough time standards required for participation competed in the 2022 Carmel Swim Club Winter Invitational last weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. With just 18 swimmers and no relays to score double points, Club Olympia placed 12th out of 21 teams, finishing ahead of the 38-member Franklin Regional Swim Team, arguably the best team in Indiana south of Carmel and Fishers.

Club Olympia’s Tony Machavariani was runner-up for the High Point Award in his age division at last weekend’s Carmel Swim Club Winter Invitational at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Tony Machavariani led the club with 126.5 points to place second in High Point for 10-and-under Boys. Machavariani placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley; third in the 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle; fourth in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and fifth in the 50 breaststroke.

Connelly Furnish finished with 80 points to place third in the 11-12 Girls 500 freestyle, fifth in the 50 breaststroke and 200 IM, sixth in the 200 freestyle, eighth in the 100 freestyle, ninth in the 100 breaststroke, 14th in the 100 butterfly and 17th in the 50 butterfly.

Joshua Pendleton scored 42 points swimming only the first two days by placing seventh in the 11-12 Boys 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 200 IM, as well as 11th in the 100 backstroke.

Shreyan Kulkarni scored 31 points and achieved Age Group State cuts in three events to now have five cuts in 10U Boys events at state. Kulkarni placed fifth in the 200 freestyle, 10th in the 50 butterfly, 11th in the 100 freestyle, 14th in the 100 breaststroke, 16th in the 50 backstroke and 18th in the 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Todd Hundley scored four points by placing 15th in the 13-14 Boys 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle. Hundley was also 17th in the 200 backstroke, 23rd in the 400 IM, 31st in the 100 butterfly and 35th in the 200 IM.

Ashley Freel scored two points by placing 15th in the Open Girls 400 IM. She was also 30th in the 100 butterfly and 35th in the 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke.

Also competing were Advika Badve, who placed as high as thirty-fourth in the 11-12 Girls 50 breaststroke; Cole Ehara, who placed 30th in the Open Boys 400 IM; Josie Hudson, who placed 33rd in the 10U Girls 50 freestyle and made Divisional cuts in two events; Maggie Johnson, who placed 26th in the 200 butterfly and 28th in the 400 IM; Nandini Kondhare, who achieved two best times in her eight 11-12 Girls events; Sanaa Kulkarni, who placed 28th in the 11-12 Girls 50 breaststroke, 33rd in the 100 breaststroke and 34th in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle; Emily Meek, who was competing for the first time at The Nat; Annie Murer and Hope Westphal, also competing on only the first two days, like their Bloomington North teammate Freel; Lily Pendleton, who placed 20th and got her first Divisional cut in the 10U Girls 200 IM; Dathan Wolf, with significantly faster times than he swam at the CSC Fall Invite just two months earlier; and Xavier Zhang (10), who placed 24th in the 10U Boys 100 Fly and achieved his second Divisional cut in the 50 backstroke.

BROOMBALL

Hansons moves into lead

Hansons took over first place in the Columbus Broomball League with its win, coupled with a loss by Monsters of Rock.

Hansons (6-1-1) blanked CCA (2-5-1) 6-0. Matt Street and Cindy Mason each scored two goals, an Rahul Bhardwaj and Keith Henry each added one.

Monsters of Rock (5-2-1) fell to Our Name Is Earl (5-3) 3-0. Noah Marsh scored two goals, and Darren Eckerly had one for Earl.

Toyota Tsunamis and Jennings County BC played to a 4-4 tie. Clayton McNealy scored two goals, and James Robertson and Shawn Rose each added one for Tsunamis (2-5-1). Darien Castetter netted three goals, and Skylar Matthews had one for Jennings (1-5-1).

BASKETBALL

Panther teams victorious

The Jennings County seventh- and eighth-grade boys White teams swept Seymour on Thursday.

Parker Elmore scored 26 points to lead the eighth-graders (12-1) to a 49-36 victory. Luke Alexander added 10.

Jennings won the seventh-grade game 51-25. Cooper Lane led the Panthers (4-6) with 15 points, while Mikey Hall scored 14 and Aaron Lewis added 11.

The Jennings eighth-grade Blue team beat Crothersville 34-27. Zach Wahlman led the Panthers with 11 points, and Ty Zohrlaut added 10.

The seventh-grade Blue team fell to Crothersville 37-33. Ryan Clark led Jennings with eight points.
