Donner, Club Olympia tune up for state, divisional meets

Twenty-nine Donner Swim Club athletes competed in last weekend’s Avon Community Swim Team Aqua Sprints, with multiple swimmers qualifying for finals as well the upcoming State and Divisional Championship Meets.

Mridula Muthukumaran earned first place and qualified for the State Championship meet in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 4.95 seconds.

Aarush Mahato placed fifth and qualified for the Divisional Championships in the 1650 freestyle (19:52.27). Caroline Crawford earned a Divisional Championship cut in the 50 freestyle (32.15). Sanchita Ponnathpur garnered a Divisional Cut in the 50 breastsroke (41.41) and 100 breaststroke (1:30.37). Garrett Perfetto qualified for the Divisional Championships in the 50 freestyle (30.84).

Ellie Proffitt, having just finished competing for Columbus East at the IHSAA state meet, led Donner’s Senior Group. Proffitt finished first in the 100 butterfly and earned 44 points for the club throughout the competition.

In the 13-and-over age group, Aarush Mahato qualified for finals in four events, earning 16 points. Abby Proffitt reached the finals in 200 backstroke, earning four points. Ainsley Sherlock earned 16 points, placing third in the 100 breaststroke.

In the 12-year-old age group, Mridula Muthiukumaran placed in the top 10 of all six of her events, earning 94 points.

In the 11-year-old age group, Garrett Perfetto advanced to finals in five events and scored 28.5 points. Caroline Crawford earned 23 points, qualifying for finals in three events including two top-10 finishes. Sanchita Ponnathpur scored 13 points, placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Rajvi Sapkal secured a spot in the finals of 100 butterfly, finishing 10th and earning seven points for the club.

In the 8-and-under category, Reyansh Nighojkar lead Donner with 130 points, placing first in the 100 butterfly and securing top-10 positions in all his events. Nathan Perfetto placed eighth in the 100 backstroke, while Cooper Bringman earned 14 points. Ella Bringman secured top 10 position in all her events, earning 84 points. Millicent Fry placed in the top 10 in each of her events, scoring 68 points.

Donner also recently competed in the Indiana Virtual Distance Challenge.

In the boys 16-year-old age group, Jude Abdallah placed sixth in the 1000 freestyle, and Brock Smith finished seventh in the 400 individual medley. Isaac Proffitt ranked third in the 1000 Freestyle for 15-year-old boys.

In the boys 13-year-old age group, Aarush Mahato finished eighth , Harshith Devaguptapu 14th and Isaac Niewedde 19th. Garrett Perfetto placed sixth in the 11-year-old boys 400 IM. In the 9-year-old boys group, Lincoln Crawford ranked second in the 1650 freestyle and fifth in 1000 freestyle.

Competing in the girls, 17-year-old age group, Paige Maddox finished second and Lauren Brault was third in the 1000 freestyle. In the 14-year-old girls 400 IM, Ainsley Sherlock placed fifth , Nicole Brault sixth, and Shelby Nay 10th . For 13-year-old girls, Abby Proffitt ranked ninth, Kanav Mehta 20th and Cora Tregoning 22nd.

Mridula Muthukumaran finished seventh overall for 12-year-old girls. For 11-year-old girls, Caroline Crawford placed 13th, Rajvi Sakpal 14th and Sanchita Ponnathpur 19th overall.

Club Olympia competes

Thirty-four Club Olympia athletes competed last weekend against 11 other teams from Southern Indiana and Kentucky in the Annual Riverside Aquatic Club Winter Invitational Swim Meet in Floyd County. The RAC Winter Invitational was a final tune up competition for many of the 54 Club Olympia Athletes who have achieved minimum time standards and are qualified to compete in the Indiana Short Course Swimming Championship Meets the first weekend in March.

Myra Jaryal won all eight of her events, capturing the 25 freestyle, 25 butterfly, 25 backstroke, 25 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke to claim the High Point Award trophy for the 8-and-under girls group.

Tony Machavariani won all 10 of his events, taking the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle and 200 IM. He currently ranks as the fifth fastest 8-year-old in the country in the 200 freestyle.

Emily Meek took first in seven of 10 events, capturing the 25 butterfly and breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 IM in earning a High Point Award for 8-and-under girls.

Connelly Furnish, competing in both 11-12 and 14U age groups, won six of seven events, taking the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke and placing second in the 200 backstroke with personal-best times in all of the 200-yard events.

Vivan Shah took first in five events, capturing the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 200 IM.

Other event winners included Zoie Chandelkar in the 14U 100 breaststroke, Cole Ehara in the Open 100 breaststroke, Aahan Gupta in the 8U 25 butterfly and 50 butterfly, Maggie Johnson in the Open 200 butterfly and Aashka Shah in the 10U 100 butterfly. Ehara finished second in five other events, and Johnson was second in four other events.

Club Olympia also won the Girls 8&U 100 medley relay, Boys 8U 100 freestyle relay, Boys 10U 200 medley relay and Girls 11-12 200 freestyle relay.

Also competing throughout the weekend and contributing several top five finishes and to the various relay teams were Arjun Agarkar, Advika Badve, Aarush Datar, Sarthak Deshmukh, Jonathon Dettmer, Sophie Graham, Cali Gray, Saya Hauser, Aurbrey Hernandez, Adir Joshi, Vidita Keskar, Nandini Kondhare, Teddy Machavariani, Shourya Valviya, Lovely Panda, Chad Pendleton, Lily Pendleton, Harini Pinna, Aksh Ranjan, Sharvi Shah, Saanvi Vibhuti, Daxton Wolf, Bella Zhang and Xavier Zhang.

HOCKEY

Icemen fall to Westfield

The Columbus Icemen fell to Westfield 2-1 last weekend. Alex Clark had an unassisted goal, and Ben Blanz was in net.

Columbus Flames Bantam A lost to Louisville 5-2 and 2-1, beat Miami 3-2 and tied Miami 2-2. Eduardo Aranda netted three goals and two assists; Will Jamerson recorded two goals and two assists, Westin Davis had one goal and two assists; River Degner notched one goal and one assist; Leif Nelson scored one goal; Wyatt Warner had two assists and Carson King, Drew Weedand Tyler Teague all added one assist. Jackson Wheatley was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Peewee B beat Owensboro 1-0 and 7-1 and tied Miami 1-1 and tied 2-2. Ayden Richardson netted four goals; Canyon Long scored two goals; Hudsom Beckom, Jonah Broderick, Bryson Moore, Cooper Ross and John Tuttle all added one goal; Noah Doig recorded three assists; Preston Bell and Lilli Donica each had two assists and Jack Treesh, Colby Payne and Garrett Uy all added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Squirt A beat Louisville Ice Cardinals 10-4 and 4-2. Carter Harris netted three goals and one assist; Max Perez scored three goals; Robby Orgass and Thomas King each had two goals and one assist; Bentley Hampton recorded one goal and two assists; Maddox Coy and Logan Barringer each had one goal and one assist; Dalton Larsh scored one goal and Keaton Grube, Chance Mathis and Luke Getchell all added one assist. Daniel Wallace was in net with 25 out of 30 saves for 80% save percentage.

Columbus Flames Squirt B beat Miami and 4-0 and 8-1 and fell to Bloomington Blades and lost 1-0 and 3-1. Thomas Degner netted five goals and one assist; Hallie Mudd scored three goals; Graham Barnes had one goal and one assist; Declan McGurk, Jonah Oliphant and Carson Sims all scored one goal; Clare Neff recorded four assists, Carter Zortman had two assists and Luke Powers added one assist. Knox Coen was in net.

Columbus Flames Bantams played Evansville and won 3-2 and lost 6-1. Tyson Tyner netted two goals and one assist; Zane Lynch, Sawyer Patterson and Bryce McDonald all scored one goal and Blake Avery added one assist. Lane Barringer was in net.

BROOMBALL

Hansons stays in first place

Hansons kept its place atop the Columbus Broomball League with a 6-2 win against Our Name Is Earl.

Matt Street scored three goals for Hansons (9-1-1), while Rahul Bhardwaj had two and Max Warr added one. Tom Kareus and Ryan Putnam scored for Earl (6-5).

Monsters of Rock beat Jennings County BC 3-1. Ben Eckhart, Zach Henderson and Tyler Rash netted goals for Monsters (7-2-2). Erik Wernke had the goal for Jennings (1-8-2).

CCA topped Toyota Tsunamis 6-2. Greg Thomas scored two goals for CCA (4-5-2), while Todd Houchin, Tim Walton, Shawn Bauman and Thom Hayes all added one. Dalton McNealy and Greg McNealy had the goals for Tsunamis (2-8-1).
