HOPE, INDIANA
Dorothy Lee Carter Hall persisted in life until December 26, 2021. Dorothy’s true age may never be known, and she’d quite like to keep it that way; her personality and appearance assisting in her secrecy.
When asked where she was born, Dorothy would daringly say, “Paris,” then softly giggle, “Tennessee.” She was the youngest child of James and Sally (Venable) Carter, joining three siblings at home: Margaret (Smith), Mabel (Henderson), and Barney Carter, all now deceased.
Dorothy married her soulmate, Wendell E Hall, on June 28, 1947, with whom she shared 58 years of life until he passed in 2005. Together they raised three children: Irene (John) O’Bryan, Wendy (Brian) Heaton, and Wendell “Butch” Hall. Dorothy and Wendell have five grandchildren: Mike (Gina) O’Bryan, Tim (Heather) O’Bryan, Lindsy Wallace, Emily (Dave) Herr, and Bradly Balmer; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was a lifelong learner. She was educated in early childhood development and encouraged others to pursue their curiosities until the day she left us. In the mid-60s, Dorothy started the New Albany, Indiana Head Start program and, over the course of her career, was the director of several successful Louisville and Southern Indiana kindergartens and preschools. Dorothy spent the last decade of her career as the beloved nanny for two young boys.
In her free time Dorothy enjoyed reading, crocheting, and painting. Even after losing her eyesight, she fed her love of literature with audiobooks. She spent her last few months rereading the classics and holding discussions in her nursing home on their themes and characters.
A charming and witty woman, Dorothy herself was a true classic.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to your local Head Start program.
A memorial service to honor Dorothy’s life will be held April 7th at 11 o’clock at the First Christian Church Chapel in Columbus, Indiana. A light lunch will follow in the church fellowship hall. The memorial graveside service will be held April 7th at 2 o’clock at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
