Hauser moving up to Class 2A

For the first time in more than a decade, Hauser is headed back to Class 2A.

The Jets, who have been a Class A school for most of the Class Sports Era, will be 2A at least in volleyball and boys and girls basketball for the next two years. They likely also will be 2A in baseball and softball, but those classifications won’t be released by the IHSAA until after the spring sports seasons.

“We’re excited about it,” Hauser athletics director Tyler Phillips said. “It’s a good thing for us. We’ll try to make deep runs in the tournament no matter what class we are. We’ll make some schedule adjustments and try to add some more 2A schools and see who will be in our sectional and try to get those teams on our schedules.”

According to figures released by the IHSAA earlier this week, Hauser has 327 students in Grades 9 through 12. The school has 84 seniors, 87 juniors, 69 sophomores and 87 freshmen.

“Enrollment for us has gone up over each year, which is something not a lot of schools can say, so that’s a good thing to have,” Phillips said. “As far as athletics, we figured we were going to be moving up, and then COVID hit, so we stayed 1A for another year.”

While Hauser is moving up, South Decatur is moving down from 2A to Class A in volleyball and boys and girls basketball. Brown County is moving down from 3A to 2A in football.

Classifications for the rest of the area schools in those sports remain unchanged.
