In 1962, he graduated from Milligan College in Johnson City, TN with a degree in Elementary Education. He received his master’s degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University. His students remarked that his classroom mirrored this as well as his attire, and he expected the same from his students. They would remember him most as the teacher that wrote while using a ruler to keep a straight line.

After retirement, Richard worked as a substitute teacher for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation only teaching Elementary Physical Education classes until 2012 when his health would no longer allow. Richard was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed keeping his vehicles immaculate, especially his Chrysler convertible. He also enjoyed having a well-manicured lawn and mowed lawns for many in his neighborhood.

Richard enjoyed traveling with Conway Tours and especially enjoyed their “Mystery Trips”. He enjoyed all kinds of dancing, particularly line dancing to country music. For many years, Richard enjoyed and took great pride in playing Santa Clause for Columbus families as well as for Columbus community and private events.
