The current Bartholomew County assessor squeaked past her challenger in a close race.
Incumbent Ginny Whipple won the Republican nomination for county assessor, beating Laura DeDomenic with 54.98% of the votes. 3,641 people voted for Whipple, and 2,981 voted for DeDomenic (45.02%). No Democratic candidates filed for the primary.
“I’m proud to have run a clean campaign, and I really appreciate the voters and my supporters,” said Whipple as the votes were still coming in.
Whipple was first elected to succeed fellow Republican Lew Wilson in 2018. She has worked in the area of tax assessment since 1983 for both private companies and local governments. She was the owner of Gna Assessment Professionals from 2006 until she assumed office in 2019.
DeDomenic, a real estate entrepreneur and small-business consultant, served on the Bartholomew County Council from 2015 to 2020. She stepped down from the council in 2020 to accept a position in the county auditor’s office.
When asked if she had any theories as to what made the race so close, Whipple said that it might be to due to recent increases in assessed property values, with notices being sent out shortly before the election.
“The market has raised the assessments, and people aren’t happy, but yet there’s nothing I can do about what the sales show,” she said.
