DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY: BCSC’s Destination Prom brings celebration back to downtown

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Prom goers dance during the BCSC Prom at The Commons in Columbus, Ind., Saturday, May 7, 2022.

Prom returned to downtown Columbus this past weekend, with families gathering to take pictures as students rolled down Washington Street in their cars and then walked down a red carpet to enter the event.

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. held its 2022 prom at The Commons Saturday night. The theme was “Destination Prom.” Prom committee head Tonya Cruser said that more than 1,200 students attended the dance.

The following students were voted prom king and queen for their respective schools:

  • Columbus East: Noah Lykins and Gabi Schuetz
  • Columbus North: Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff and Sarah Bennett
  • CSA New Tech: Stephen Ross and Piper Parks

After dancing the night away at The Commons, students were invited to keep the fun going at Turning Point Domestic Violence Service’s “Dance Marathon: After Prom Party” at Central Middle School that same night.

The event was a combination of Turning Point’s annual Dance Marathon event — which raises awareness about dating violence and promotes healthy relationships — and an after prom previously organized by the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department for BCSC students.

The dance marathon event was free and open to all Bartholomew County students in grades 9-12, regardless of school. Turning Point Director of Prevention Stephen Dishinger said that about 500 high school student attended the event.

“Everybody seemed to have a really great time,” he said.

The following four seniors were awarded Sarah Cannon Dance Marathon Scholarships of $1,000 each:

  • Layla Terry (Columbus North)
  • Cory Lekens (Columbus East)
  • Elizabeth Roberts (Hauser)
  • Sara Hockersmith (Columbus East)
