COLUMBUS, INDIANA

Michael Edward Petro, 45, a resident of Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at his home.

Mike was born in Milton, Florida, October 27, 1976, the son of Dennis W. Petro and Jane M. Bruce Petro Hammond.

Mike was a member of the Indiana Army Reserve National Guard and honorably served our country with two tours to Afghanistan and one tour to Iraq while serving active duty in the United States Army rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded numerous decorations, medals, citations and campaign ribbons.

Mike was an HVAC technician with Advantage Heating and Air Inc in Columbus for many years. Mike was a tinkerer and enjoyed turning wrenches on cars. He cherished the time he spent with his family and his dogs and loved to puppy hug. He always looked forward to skateboarding with his nephew and social media searching.

Mike is survived by his mother and stepfather, Jane and Dick Hammond of Edinburgh; his companion, Mackenzie Covert of Columbus; daughter, Cameren Covert of Columbus; brothers, Christopher (Nicole) Petro of Edinburgh and Matthew (Melissa) Petro of Avon; stepsisters, Vicki (Andy) McDonald of Poland, Ohio and Vanessa (Shaun) Loftis of Hagerstown; aunts and uncles, Mark and Sherry Petro of Nashville, Gary and Laura Petro of Columbus, Patti and Jody Bunton of North Vernon, and Jimmy Dale and Debbie Bruce of Columbus; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Dennis W. Petro and his grandparents.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. A live stream of the funeral may be seen at barkesweaverglick.com. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday.

The committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. The Indiana Army Reserve National Guard Honor Guard and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion will present full military honors.
