Area recycling programs receive grants

Two local recycling efforts received grants to further their programs, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management announced this week.

St. Bartholomew Church and School in Columbus and Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District, which serves Jennings and other counties from its base in Madison, were among 18 applicants to receive funding through IDEM’s Community Recycling Grant Program. SISWD received a grant of $24,247 while St. Bartholomew was awarded a grant of $6,758.

According to IDEM, St. Bartholomew will use the grant money to purchase recycling and compost bins to implement a recycling program to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. The project also includes an educational component to involve students, staff and other families within their community in their efforts.

Other grant recipients will use the funding to increase education and promotion of recycling, waste reduction, organics management and household waste collection and disposal, IDEM said.
