Firefighters put out machine fire at Cummins

Columbus firefighters extinguished a machine fire at a Cummins, Inc. facility at 1000 Fifth St. at 2:42 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the large engine manufacturing facility and located the equipment. Smoke conditions inside the building created low visibility, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters identified a large piece of equipment on the production floor with flames coming from the machine. Firefighters also found the building sprinkler system had activated in the area of the fire.

Using a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, firefighters fully extinguished the fire. Firefighters utilized ventilation fans to clear the smoke from the building, Wilson said.

Firefighters reported that damages to the equipment were estimated at $50,000. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
