Letter: Reflecting on Memorial Day, considering local leadership

From: Tom Heller

Reflecting upon a holiday established to honor and remember those who have given their lives for our nation, might we wonder if their sacrifice may have proven in vain?

Look around. Everywhere we hear of fentanyl/opioids, gender confusion, school disruptions, uncontrolled borders, energy prices/inflation, baby formula shortages, social media excesses, embarrassing withdrawals.

Does government serve our people anymore? Only one in six voters turning out in the recent local election might suggest not.

You may have arrived at the answer to that question at the federal level, but what about our local government? Indeed, what do you know about our local government?

Without good communities, we can’t have a good nation. We need to focus on our own backyards. Are those who’ve been entrusted to serve and represent us up to the task? Do they bring honor to those who fought and died for us?

We need to raise our nation’s flag in honor and pride once again, not lower it in shame every other week. Memorial Day marks more than simply the beginning of summer and big auto dealer blowout sales.
