SWAT team arrests local man on multiple charges

The Columbus Police Department SWAT Team served a search and arrest warrant resulting in one person taken into custody Friday.

Officers, from the police department and Bartholomew County Sheriff Department, went to the 11000 block of North County Road 400W, where detectives from the sheriff’s department were investigating a domestic battery with substantial bodily injury involving a firearm.

As a result of the the domestic battery investigation, it was learned that Jeremiah Burris, 40, 11617 N. County Road 400W, Columbus, had an outstanding warrant for violating the conditions of his pre-trial release for the original charge of failure to register as a sex offender as well as violation of pre-trial release for invasion of privacy.

While executing the arrest warrant, Burris barricaded inside the residence, at which time negotiators on scene attempted to resolve the stand off. The incident was resolved when Burris was taken into custody for the above mentioned warrants.

The domestic battery investigation is ongoing.

While executing the search warrant of the residence, suspected methamphetamine, associated drug paraphernalia and a firearm was located, deputies said.

Burris was arrested on preliminary charges of three “no bond” warrants, failure to register as a violent sexual offender, and multiple counts of invasion of privacy, deputies said.
