A local teacher is being recognized for his service, thanks to nominations from students.

Business teacher and girls’ golf coach Scott Seavers has been named Columbus North’s 2021-22 Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Bull Dog Alumni Association. As an award recipient, he receives a $1,000 and “a token of our appreciation,” the association said.

Seavers is a graduate of Ball State University and has been with North for almost 30 years; he began teaching there in 1995. He has taught a variety of business classes, including those at a college level.

Additionally, he has served on a number of committees, provided oversight and guidance for senior projects, coordinated job placement for students, served as varsity girls’ golf coach since 2008 and been an adviser/sponsor with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

According to North’s alumni association, students were able to nominate teachers for the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award based on certain criteria, including “ability to motivate students, positive and supportive classroom climate, thorough and timely grading of assignments, high expectation of students, creativity of assignments and strong relationships with students, parents and colleagues.” Seavers was selected by a committee based on these standards.

The announcement was met with several congratulatory comments and commendations on social media.

“My favorite teacher ever,” wrote former student Rosa Lunsford. “So well deserved. Mr. Seavers changed my career path and helped me change my life. I am forever grateful!”

Jay Morris wrote that Seavers is a “great teacher and an even better person.”

“Congratulations Scott and thanks for all you do for our kids,” he said.
