COLUMBUS
Donald L. Spurgeon, 93, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 7 at 12:30 pm at Seymour Place Senior Living Community.
Don was born on January 28, 1929, in Freetown, Indiana to Lloyd and Vinnie Forgey Spurgeon. A sister, Frida Fay Spurgeon Duchaine followed three years later.
Don graduated from Freetown High school in 1947 where he was on the basketball team. He got a job at Reeves Pulley and this is where he met his future wife, Betty Green. They married on October 9, 1949, at St. Peters Lutheran Church where they were both members. Don and Betty had three children: Debbie, Mark, and David. He served in the Indiana National Guard 38th Infantry Division as Sergeant First Class. Don enjoyed lake fishing. He and Betty spent many winters in Sebring, Florida where fishing was #1 on his list. Don retired from Reliance Electric (formerly Reeves Pulley) after 44 years of service.
The family wishes to thank the many special people who took excellent care of Don at Seymour Place Senior Living Community.
A celebration of life showing will be held at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home on Monday, June 13th from 4 to 8 pm. The service will be held on June 14th at 10 am with the interment immediately following at the Garland Brook Cemetery.
Survivors include his sister, Frida Spurgeon Duchaine; his sons, Mark (Judy) Spurgeon, and David (Monica) Spurgeon; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his daughter Debbie Spurgeon Lienhoop in 2018; and his wife, Betty L. Spurgeon in 2019.
