Columbus Police Department officers arrested a local man on felony charges Monday afternoon after a vehicle pursuit involving a stolen car.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., CPD officers responded to the area of Seventh Street and Werner Avenue in regards to a theft investigation. While in the area, officers observed a red passenger car traveling at a high rate of speed, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officers attempted to stop the car, however, the driver, who was later identified as Melvin G. Foree, 39, of 916 California St., refused to pull over, Harris said.

Officers pursued the vehicle as it disregarded the traffic signal at 10th Street and Central Avenue. Foree eventually lost control of the vehicle and struck a curb near 10th Street and McClure Road and fled from the vehicle on foot, Harris said. Officers apprehended Foree in the 900 block of McClure Road.

Foree was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital and later taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle and resisting law enforcement on foot.

Foree was being held without bond in the Bartholomew County Jail.

The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible, Harris said.
