German Township volunteer firefighters called to garage fire that started in a grill

German Township firefighters were called to the 9700 block of East STreet for a garage fire at 6:41 p.m. Monday.

The fire was extinguished quickly and investigation revealed that the source of the fire was a gas grill and four gallons of oil burning on the garage floor. Crews then used a fan to remove smoke from inside the garage.

The homeowner had just ignited the gas grill to cook dinner, when the table it was on fell over.  The grill fell into the garage and melted several containers holding approximately four gallons of oil, firefighters said.

The subsequent fire damaged a portion of the garage and contents.  The quick-thinking homeowner grabbed two fire extinguishers and kept the fire from spreading.  A Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy, who was in the area, also used an extinguisher to keep the fire from spreading before Engine 81 arrived.

GTVFD had 11 firefighters along with Engine 81, Tanker 81, Rescue 81, Squad 81, Intervention 81, and Chief 801 on scene of the fire.

Edinburgh Fire Dept was also dispatched to the incident, however was disregarded before they arrived.
