COLUMBUS, INDIANA
Maxine Evelyn Harris, 96, was born June 18, 1926, in Champaign, Illinois to John and Martha Mayer. She passed away from natural causes on the morning of August 6, 2022, at Brown County Health and Living in Nashville, Indiana. Prior to this she resided for over seven years at Parkside Court in Columbus, Indiana.
She is survived by her three children, daughter, Sandy (Mike) Clark of Arizona, son, Donald (Cheryl) Harris of Indiana, and daughter, Christie (John) Deyle of Arizona as well as two grandsons, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson. She is also survived by a younger sister and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, David.
Maxine grew up during the depression and World War II. She attended Champaign High School and after graduation, she wen to work at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in the Agricultural Department. While there, she met her husband David on a blind date and subsequently moved to South Bend, Indiana where they raised their three children. While raising her children, she was active in the school PTA, the Boy Scouts, a local sorority and her church. As the children grew older, she was employed as a secretary at Knootz Wagner.
Upon retirement, she and Dave moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona to an adult community where she enjoyed several activities including making stained glass and ceramics, After the passing of her husband, she moved to Parkside Court in Columbus, Indiana where she remained active in her retirement community and enjoyed spending time with her son and his family.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3201 Central Avenue, Columbus, Indiana; Pastor John W. Armstrong will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grace Lutheran Church which is involved in many charities including Orphan Grain Train, Lutheran Hour and Luther Academy.
She will be interred next to her husband at Bardolph Cemetery, Bardolph, Illinois.
