COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus firefighters responded to a report of grease fire at 616 Third St., which is the downtown Dairy Queen, at approximately 8:43 a.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found that the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival. Restaurant officials told firefighters that the fire occurred in a food fryer after the deep fat fryers had been turned on for the start of business, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

During the investigation, firefighters learned that an employee extinguished the fire with an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher before flames reached the restaurant’s fire suppression hood system.

As a result of the fire and and the use of a fire extinguisher, firefighters ventilated the smoke from the business with ventilation fans. No visible damages were reported by firefighters on the scene. Due to the occurrence of a fire, the store will be temporarily closed until the health department can inspect the restaurant following the cleanup efforts by the restaurant. No timeline for a re-opening was provided. No injuries were reported at the scene.
