Warrior Kings close out concert series

The Warrior Kings will perform Sept. 8 at the J.C. Bank Summer Concert Series.

A hard rock band “with a dark blues soul,” as its website states, will close out J.C. Bank’s free new Summer Concert Series at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at 300 Washington St. in front of The Commons in downtown Columbus.

The Warrior Kings last performed in Columbus in 2018 at what was then known as the JCB Neighborfest street concert. Guitarist Casey Harshbarger talked about hot licks.

“As a rock musician, playing outdoors is about the best thing there is,” he said then, speaking by phone from his Indianapolis home. “You usually get to turn things up a little more, the music seems to reach out a little further, and people usually are happy to be out having a good time.”

Harshbarger and his mates — bassist Austin Shearer and drummer Benjamin Williams — should find themselves in their element then.

In 2016, the group headlined the arts council’s Biggest Block Party Ever downtown, also an outdoor bash. They feature a bluesy bent even on their original songs, and covers of some artists. Cover tunes include material from Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Robin Trower and Ray Charles.

Kurt Schwarze of Fourth Street Bar and Grill booked the lineup of bands, partly from those that have proven popular at his own establishment and at previous outdoor street events. (The Warrior Kings, in fact, play at the Fourth Street venue on Friday evening).

JC Bank’s Ashley Abner and Amy Shearer handled marketing of the events. A crowd estimated at more than 350 people attended the first concert. And rain hardly interfered with the concerts. Last month, local ensemble Flat Earth performed inside The Commons when Mother nature failed to cooperate.

The bank also has co-sponsored the popular Seymour City Jam at the JC Bank Pavilion. The last performance featured Sounds of Summer, a Beach Boys tribute group that has been popular in Columbus and one that has been onstage with the Beach Boys.
