Services and studies

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. J.A.M. (children’s church) is offered at both services. The church also offers Sunday school classes at 10 a.m.

Have you ever wanted to ask Jesus a question face to face? We may not get a chance in this life, but others had that opportunity during Jesus’ life. Sundays through Oct. 2, we will explore those questions, Jesus’ answers, and what they mean for us today in our sermon series, “The Things They Asked.”

Every Thursday, when school is in full day session, a $4 taco/chicken lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with Pit Stop (Taco Church) Lunch.

Columbus Baptist Church — The church offers worship services on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A teen service is offered at 6:30 p.m. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study, Kids Club and teens meet at 6:30 p.m. There are various small group events weekly.

Community Church of Columbus — Community Church of Columbus meets for Sunday service at 9 and 10:30 a.m. The second service is livestreamed and available on the Community Church’s Columbus Indiana Facebook page and Community Church of Columbus YouTube channel.

East Columbus Christian Church — East Columbus Christian Church is open for in-person worship on Sunday mornings with a blended worship service at 10 a.m. The church also has online worship available through Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday morning Bible study is at 9 a.m. Youth meet at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and children’s ministry meets through Zoom on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Pastor Jongmin Lee will bring the message at the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service. The blended worship service includes praise music, traditional hymns and children’s moment, a time when the children receive a special message. Sunday school is held immediately after the morning service, and classes are available for all ages and Bible interests. There will be no Tuesday Bible study or evening chapel service at this time.

“Grace’s Table” Free Meal will be served Sept. 11 and the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the youth center.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church is now open for in-person service at 9:30 a.m. If you would like to join on Zoom, please email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Fellowship and coffee hour is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Please contact the church for the Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday each month at 1 p.m. with “Holy Envy” by Barbara Brown Taylor.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. The church also livestreams worship each Sunday on Facebook at Faith Lutheran Church — Columbus Indiana. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study will follow worship at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday evening worship (masks required) takes place at 6:30 p.m.

Starting its 22nd year, the church will host Sunrise Bible Study which ministers to people with intellectual disabilities. The year will begin on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. with Wounded Healer leading the praise music followed by prayer and fellowship. The study will begin with God Create the World on Sept. 19. First Lutheran Church — The church offers in-person worship on Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. for the classic service and 11:15 a.m. for the casual service. Livestreaming of both services can be accessed on the church’s YouTube page.

First Presbyterian Church — On this Communion Sunday, Sept. 4, the church ponders what it means and what it takes to follow God. Pastor Felipe will preach on Jeremiah 18:1-11 and Luke 14:25-33 a sermon titled “Shaped to Follow.” The choir will lead the church in worship.

The church is worshiping in-person in the sanctuary (masks requested inside). The service will be at 9:30 a.m. at church or livestreamed on Facebook, Zoom or YouTube.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to our Hot Meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (Please enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.) We are an LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m., Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “At Ease in the Arms of God.” The scripture will be Jeremiah 18:1-11 and Psalm 139:1-6.

The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances to the sanctuary. Masks are optional. There will be no Sunday school on Sept. 4. Childcare will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page, facebook.com/columbusfumc, and our YouTube channel (go to youtube.com and search for FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

On Friday, Sept. 16, the church will host Arkady (cello) and Tamara (piano) Orlovsky as part of the Fridays@First concert series. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free; donations are encouraged.

Flintwood Wesleyan Church — Sunday morning worship begins at 9 a.m. with the Amplify (contemporary) service. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. The Well (traditional) service begins at 11 a.m. Both worship services are led by Pastor Wesley Jones. The church’s Sunday Amplify services are livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Wednesday activities begin with a meal served at 5:30 p.m. in the friendship center. The iKids program begins at 6:15 p.m. and youth meet downstairs in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Prayer team meets in the prayer room downstairs in the main building at 6:15 p.m., and adult Bible study meets at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Scouts are meeting Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Garden City Christian Church — Sunday School classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. The Sunday morning worship service is at 10 a.m. Fall Wednesday evening youth group began with Great Beginnings on Aug. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial Baptist Church — The church is offering in-person and online worship services at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school is offered online at 10:45 a.m. Online services are via Facebook and YouTube.

For the remainder of the summer, the church will explore the book of Psalms. The title of this exploration is “Summer of Psalms.”

Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church — The church invites the community to visit their little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books.

Newbern United Methodist Church — The church is practicing strict COVID-19 preventative measures. Masks are required. All activities are postponed until further notice except for Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. and online Bible study each Wednesday at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Pastor Al White, the church’s transitional pastor, is leading worship and sharing messages that encourage firm foundations of faith in Jesus. Simple church — simply Jesus.

The church has added a time for discipleship growth at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings. There’s always a coffee and donut time downstairs before the morning worship time at 10 a.m.

Petersville United Methodist Church — Pastor Milne’s sermon title will be “RE:concile Relationships,” and scripture will come from Philemon 1-21.

Kathy Bush will serve as worship and song leader, and Teresa Covert will share a message with the children. Chris Kimerling will be at the organ, and Connie Nolting will be playing the piano.

Communion will be served.

A time of refreshments and fellowship will follow the worship service.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — Sandy Hook United Methodist Church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. The church will offer two services on Sept. 4 — the traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and the contemporary service at 11 a.m. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring the message “RE:concile Relationships” as part of the new sermon series “RE:boot.”

Nursery is available for children 2 and younger from 8:30 a.m. until the end of the second service. Sunday school classes are offered between services at 10 a.m.

On Sept. 25, there will be one service at 10 a.m. with a hog roast meal served afterward. This will be to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Wertz Memorial Church and the 50th anniversary of the building that is Sandy Hook United Methodist. Anyone with history or ties to either is welcome and would love for you to come back and visit.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — Pastor Jeff Patterson will present the message “Do You Renounce…?” based on Luke 14:25-35 Sunday at the 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services.

Christian fellowship will begin at 9:10 a.m. Christian educational classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m. Zach Matthews will lead the adult Bible study on Logical Reasoning, How to Build a Sound Argument. The Spanish worship service will be in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m. with Convivio (Life Together) at noon.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on WYGS 91.1 FM, which also broadcasts the Lutheran Hour every Sunday at 7 p.m.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Gospel of John, and at 6 p.m. studying the Gospel of Luke. All are welcome.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m., musician Sean Gaskell will give a performance on the kora, an ancient 21-string harp from West Africa. The instrument is traditionally played by oral historians, telling stories of war, hardship, love and loss.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m., will be the Annual Water Communion Ingathering Service; water from different places is combined, symbolizing the essential role of water and our reuniting after our travels during the summer months. Those attending may bring water from special places in their lives: ponds, creeks, a rain barrel, the kitchen sink, etc.
