3A No. 6 Tigers topple East boys

For the better part of Saturday afternoon’s boys soccer clash, Columbus East’s defense held firm against one of the state’s top teams.

But two goals from Fishers in the first 10 minutes and another in the 68th minute allowed the Class 3A No. 6 Tigers to leave town with a 3-0 victory.

“The middle section against one of the top teams in the state I think was pretty solid,” East coach Josh Gonsior said. “We created some chances offensively. We obviously didn’t finish once again, but we’re doing those little things, and hopefully, it pays off.”

Gonsior, however, wasn’t pleased with the start by the Olympians (1-4-4).

“We came out flat in the beginning and didn’t execute the game plan that we expected,” Gonsior said. “We didn’t put them under high pressure like we wanted to, and they were able to get two goals out of it really early. It’s always tough to recover from that, but I thought they did a good job of keeping the game in front of them for the middle section of the game.”

The score would have been a lot more lopsided had it not been for some big saves by East goalkeeper Pete Coriden. Coriden, who earlier in the week, moved into second place on the Olympians’ all-time shutout list, finished with 16 saves.

“We started the season kind of rough in that regard, but we knew we had a senior keeper who has a lot of experience and who would keep us in a lot of games this year,” Gonsior said. “Being able to rely on a player like that and his confidence back there is better for our defense, and it just helps us as a team know that we’re going to be in every game with him back there.”

Fishers outshot East 25-5. The Tigers put 19 shots on goal to three for the Olympians.
