BCSC candidate forums planned online

Local teachers’ organizations are hosting two virtual events to help voters learn more about the 11 individuals running for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. school board.

The Columbus Educators Association (CEA) and the Bartholomew County Retired Teachers Association (BARTA) will co-host school board candidate forums from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 and Sept. 29.

All BCSC board candidates have agreed to participate in the forums, which will be held via Zoom. CEA officials said that these sessions will also be recorded and uploaded to YouTube.

“We are grateful that the candidates are taking time to speak with current and retired educators,” said CEA Second Vice President Dakota Hudelson in an official statement. “We hope to provide a platform for the candidates to share their unique visions for BCSC schools.”

The Sept. 27 forum will feature candidates from District 1 (Anakarina Hurtado, Jason Major, and David Vincent) and District 2 (incumbent Rich Stenner and Roy West). Members of the public can register to watch the event live at bit.ly/BoardForum12.

The Sept. 29 session will feature candidates from District 4 (Dale Nowlin and Eric Grow) and District 6 (incumbent Kathy Dayhoff-Dwyer, Mark Douglas, Cheryl Miles-Vieth and Logan Schulz). Registration is available at bit.ly/BoardForum46.

Members of the public are invited to submit questions for candidates, which can be done via a Google form at bit.ly/BoardForumQuestions.

A team of current and retired teachers will review submissions and select final questions for the forums. Organizers said that due to time constraints and anticipated interest, it is unlikely that all submitted questions will be asked.

CEA and BARTA held a similar event during BCSC’s 2020 board elections, with candidates responding to questions submitted by CEA members.
