Club Olympia opens short course season

Club Olympia opened its winter short course season Wednesday against Franklin Regional Swim Team (FRST).

FRST, with 77 swimmers, scored 914 in the boys events and 1,747 in the girls events, for a team total of 2,661 to win the dual meet. Club Olympia, competing with 53 swimmers, including 12 brand new swimmers who just joined the team the day after Labor Day, scored 1,483 in the boys events and 804 in the girls events, for a team total of 2,287.

Also swimming unattached under the 120-day transfer period, were four swimmers — Turner Mellencamp, Camila Mejia Murguia, Rebeka Mejia Murguia and Graesyn Steinkoenig — who joined the team earlier this month, as well as Brady Beyer, who still is attached to The Swim Team in Southern California, but is training with Club Olympia while his club coach is in China.

Leading the way for Club Olympia by winning all three of their individual events were Ashley Freel, Tony Machavariani and Joshua Pendleton. Freel actually swam in five races.The 50 freestyle was a “Skins Competition” with the fastest four from the heats racing a second time in semifinals and then the fastest two from that race competing a third time in finals. Freel broke 25 seconds on her third 50 to win in 24.9 seconds. Machavariani won the boys 10U 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke. Pendleton won the 11-12 boys 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Others winning events included Beyer, swimming unattached, in the 13-and-over 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Zoie Chandelkar in the 13O 100 butterfly, Connelly Furnish in the 13O 100 breaststroke; Todd Hundley in the 13O 100 backstroke; Shreyan Kulkarni in the 10U 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly, Misha Machavariani in the 13O 100 freestyle; Camila Mejia Murguia, swimming unattached, in the 10U 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle; Rebeca Mejia Murguia, also swimming unattached, in the 10U 50 breaststroke; Luke Miller in the 13O 100 breaststroke; Annie Murer in the 13O 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle; Judah Nickoll in the 13O 50 freestyle and Daxton Wolf in the 11-12 100 backstroke.

Relay winners included Machavariani, Cavan Stilson, Nickoll and Pratt Badve in the Boys 13O 200 freestyle relay; Nickoll, Machavariani, Cole Ehara and Badve in the 200 medley relay; Murer, Furnish, Freel and Chandelkar in the Girls 13O 200 medley relay; and Machavariani, Pendleton, Xavier Zhang and Kulkarni in the Boys 12U 200 medley relay.

Next up for the team is the Oct. 7-9 Jack Thompson Invite, hosted by Lakeside Swim Club in Louisville.

TENNIS

Spartans win twice

Northside Middle School beat Franklin 4-1 on Monday and Madison 4-1 on Thursday to improve its record to 9-1.

Varsity winners against Franklin were singles players Advait Aras, Shashu Sabapathy and Vyom Desai and the doubles team of Cale Fitzsimmons/Andrew Huang.

Varsity winners against Madison 4-1 were Aras, Sabapathy and Desai in singles and the doubles team of Huang/Munnaluri.

The JV lost to Franklin 3-2 with winners including singles player Chandan Munnaluri and the doubles team of Armando Duran-Blanc/Shun Nakano and defeated Madison 3-2 with winners including singles player Alex Zeng and the doubles teams of Nico Moran Mendez/Niranjan Pillai and Vitor Potenza/Hiram Tame.

Jennings splits pair

Jennings County split with Batesville on Tuesday, with the seventh grade winning 25-16, 25-19 and the eighth grade falling 25-23, 13-25, 15-14.

Aniston Kent pounded nine kills, and Kassidy Warren served five aces to lead the seventh-graders. Aylah Belding recorded 23 kills, and Lilly Franks had 19 digs and four aces to lead the eighth-graders (16-4)

Both teams were coming off Tri-County tournament titles. the eighth-graders beat Seymour 25-11, 25-18 and Northside 25-13, 25-14, and the seventh-graders also topped Seymour and Northside.

Belding pounded 12 kills, Etta Young had two blocks, Franks notched 13 digs and Milly Gresham served 11 aces to lead the Panther eighth-graders. Kent’s nine kills and Madelyn Maschino’s 13 aces led the seventh-graders.

Panthers blank Eagles

Jennings County used goals from five different players to shut out Jac-Cen-Del 5-0 on Tuesday.

Jacob Ferguson, Braylen Foist, Kaleb McIntosh, Bryson Scroggin and Gabe Viegant scored for the Panthers (3-4-1). Levi Whitesell posted four saves, and Jacob Ferguson added three saves.

Chargers top Panthers

Central Middle School picked up a 38-12 win against Jennings County on Wednesday.

Ryan Clark and Cooper Lane ran for touchdowns for Jennings (1-5).
