Members of the public may offer comments and questions on the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.’s 2023 budget.

The school board’s meeting this Monday, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will include a 2023 budget hearing.

The board previously had a budget presentation and work session during its Sept. 12 meeting. According to Assistant Superintendent of Finance Chad Phillips, the board is expected to vote on the budget’s adoption on Oct. 24.

As of Sept. 12, Phillips said the school corporation’s planned budget for 2023 was a little more than $145 million, which is a 5% increase over 2022.

The school board’s agenda for Monday also includes an additional appropriation hearing for general obligation bonds that were approved at the Sept. 12 meeting. Additionally, there will be a vote to consider an additional appropriation resolution and final resolution for these bonds.

“This is something that we have to do any time we issue bonds,” Phillips told The Republic. “And it’s only because the board hasn’t technically approved spending any of that bond money for this calendar year, and so it’s really a technicality. The board … has already approved borrowing the dollars, they just haven’t approved spending any of them.”

According to school officials, the bonds will fund renovations at Parkside Elementary School, HVAC upgrades and other improvements at Schmitt Elementary School, and athletic improvement projects at Columbus East and North high schools.

The public hearing on the bond appropriations is scheduled to take place after the 2023 budget hearing.
