Prospective pet owners will have the chance, starting Saturday, to save as much as $70 on adoption fees.
The Bartholomew County Humane Society Animal Shelter will offer reduced fees from Saturday through Oct. 8 through its participation in the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” fall event.
Shelter director Kirsten VantWoud, normal adoption fees are $120 for dogs and $80 for cats. With BISSELL’s reimbursement, the shelter will be able to offer a $50 adoption fee for both cats and dogs during the week of the event.
The easiest way to set up an appointment at the shelter is to fill out an adoption application at bartholomewhumane.org. Staff will then contact the applicant to set up a time for them to come to the shelter and look at the animals.
Information about available dogs and cats can be viewed on the same website.
Appointments can also be made by emailing [email protected] Individuals without access to internet can set up an appointment by calling 812-372-6063 and fill out an application at the shelter.
“We’re really hoping to get a good turnout,” said VantWoud. “The shelter is really full. We have a lot of puppies right now, and we have a lot of kittens, as well as our normal adult animals who are looking for homes. So the shelter is just packed, and we’re hoping that this event will encourage people who are thinking about getting a pet to come and do it now so that we can get a little space opened up for other animals that need to come in.”
The local animal shelter is one of over 280 organizations participating in BISSELL’s “Empty the Shelters” fall event. The foundation said shelters throughout the United States are overburdened, with many pet owners giving up their animals due to factors such as economic challenges and the housing crisis.
