North’s Bunker leads by 5 shots at state finals

CARMEL — A total of 102 golfers teed it up at Prairie View on Friday, and one broke par.

Columbus North freshman Ava Bunker fired a 3-under-par 69 in her Girls Golf State Finals debut. She will take a five-shot lead into today’s final round.

“It could have been a little better,” Bunker said. “I had two three-putts, but other than that, it was fine. I was driving it well, and everything was going well.”

Bunker birdied Nos. 4 and 9 to shoot 34 on the front nine. She bogeyed No. 11, birdied Nos. 12 and 15, bogeyed No. 16 and birdied No. 17 to close with a 35 on the back nine.

“She played really smart and managed the course very well,” North coach Scott Seavers said. “She made good decisions all day, stayed confident and stuck to her game plan.”

Another freshman, Ava South of Batesville, is in second-place at 2-over 74. Senior Sage Parsetich of Center Grove, which has a three-shot lead on Carmel in the team standings, is in third at 4-over 76.

Bunker plans to take the same approach she did Friday into today’s final round.

“As long as I keep a level head (today), I should be able to keep around that,” Bunker said. “I just have to keep a level head and do what I do and keep up the hard work.”
