Two men were arrested by Columbus police officers on several felony charges after an armed robbery was reported early Sunday morning.

At approximately 4 a.m., CPD officers were sent to an armed robbery in the 1000 block of Ninth Street. When officers arrived, they were informed that two suspects reportedly used a firearm to rob another person of currency before fleeing the area in a dark colored vehicle, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

A short time later, officers observed a vehicle that matched the description given to the officers at the scene of the robbery. The officers conducted a felony traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle on U.S. 31 near County Road 450N and observed a large sum of money inside the vehicle, Harris said.

Two people inside the vehicle who were later identified as Justin D. Allen, 22, of 8666 W. County Road 700S and Carter E. Kappel, 21, of Washington, Indiana were taken into custody, Harris said.

During a search of the vehicle, the officers also located drugs and drug paraphernalia along with a handgun that appeared to have the serial number removed, Harris said.

Allen and Kappel were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:

Robbery with a deadly weapon (firearm)

Possession of a handgun w/obliterated serial number

Possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon

Intimidation with a deadly weapon

Pointing a firearm

Both men remain incarcerated without bond on a 48-hour-hold at the Bartholomew County Jail.
