Mysterious pipe determined to be completely harmless abandoned phone lines

COLUMBUS — An uncovered pipe found in Mill Race Park is an old, abandoned phone line and conduit, city officials said Thursday.

Engineering technician Patrick Nyffeler said that the pipe, which was spotted by a concerned Republic reader near the bank in the Flatrock River, does not create any hazards.

“The city does not own the pipes and/or the cable,” said City Engineer/Executive Director of Public Works Dave Hayward. “Since AT&T responded and had some knowledge of the pipes, I assume they own it.”
