COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public that scammers are using sheriff deputy names in phone calls in an attempt to get community members to pay money.

Over the past few days, the sheriff’s office has received multiple calls from citizens who have received phone calls from person(s) claiming to be a deputy sheriff – they are using the names of real deputies. Each time, they have tried to convince people there is some sort of tax warrant or other legal holding against their person which can only be released if an amount of money is paid to the caller via a variety of methods.

At no time will a deputy attempt to collect money directly over the telephone for any reason, the department said.

Anyone receiving a call may report it to the department by calling 812-379-1650.
