Diane Spofford: Library one attraction that spurred a move here

Diane Spofford

I want to share with you my reasons for supporting our outstanding Bartholomew County Public Library.

My mother was an avid reader and she introduced her three daughters to the library when we were very young. Ever since I was a child, I loved going to the library. My mother would allow me to walk the five-block route all by myself.

I was so proud of my ownership of my very own library card and treated it as though it were gold. The librarians were always welcoming and the place was my favorite destination besides my home. I would spend an hour or more deciding just what books were going home with me. I was a very frequent user, carefully carrying home seven or eight books at every trip.

Those books were my vehicles to other kinds of worlds. I loved entering those worlds.

One of the strongest impressions I had, when my husband and I were checking out Columbus as a possible community to move to, was the Bartholomew County Public Library. The fact that the library was of such importance to the people of Columbus that it was designed by a renowned architect made an enormous impression on both of us.

We were correct in our first impressions and that feeling of pleasure and satisfaction has remained for the 49 years I have lived in our community.

I am so grateful for the library, for the genuinely helpful and friendly staff, for the variety of books, newspapers, videos, CDs, DVDs, magazines, author talks, and numerous other opportunities the public has been provided.

Just as delightful for me has been the joy of giving in return. I have worked with a variety of staff for library-supported fundraisers, public events, author visits (happily shared dinner with Tess Gerritsen, author of the “Rizzoli & Isles” series), and the ongoing book sale. I am grateful for these many opportunities and look to the future to continue my bond with the library in meaningful ways.

I happily support the library as a Friend of Bartholomew County Public Library.

Please join me in supporting Bartholomew County Public Library’s programs and activities.
