Coroner: Car-train collision at Indianapolis Road and Lowell Road is a fatality

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting has confirmed that the car-train collision at Indianapolis Road and Lowell Road is a fatal accident.

It is the second fatality involving a train in Bartholomew County in two days.

The crossing where the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. Monday does not have flashing lights or a gate to indicate when a train is approaching.

Accident reconstructionists from Columbus Police Department are working at the scene, assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police.

On Sunday afternoon, the first responders were sent to train tracks at Dawson Street and State Road 11 after Dylan Richard Lonaker, 29, Columbus, was hit by a northbound train while walking northbound on the tracks.

Sheriff Matt Myers said investigators are waiting for video from the train before releasing more information about the accident.

ORIGINAL STORY

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Emergency responders have been sent to an accident involving a car hit by a train on tracks along Indianapolis Road at Lowell Road, believed to have been called in around 5 p.m.

The crossing does not have flashing lights or a gate to indicate an oncoming train.

No further information is being released at this time.

This is the second accident involving a train in two days.

On Sunday, Dylan Richard Lonaker, 29, Columbus, was killed when he was hit by a northbound train while walking northbound on train tracks at Dawson Street and State Road 11. That accident remains under investigation.

Sheriff Matt Myers said investigators are waiting for video from the train before releasing more information about the accident.
