Local man dies in train accident

Photo provided An investigation is continuing into the death of Dylan Richard Lonaker, 29, Columbus, who was hit by a northbound train while walking on the tracks Sunday at about 3:18 p.m.

Investigators from multiple departments were called to a fatal accident involving a pedestrian hit by a train at 3:18 p.m. Sunday.

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Dylan Richard Lonaker, 29, Columbus. According to investigators, Lonaker, who lived in the area near where the incident happened at Dawson Street and State Road 11, was believed to be walking northbound on the tracks when the northbound train hit him.

Lonaker’s family has been notified of his death.

Accident reconstructionists from the Bartholomew County Sheriff Department, Columbus Police Department and Indiana State Police were assisting with the investigation Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Matt Myers said, and were still at the scene at 6 p.m.

The coroner’s office is planning on submitting toxicology tests on Lonaker as part of the investigation.
