Edinburgh man accused of murder in family-dispute shooting

EDINBURGH — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies have arrested an Edinburgh man on a preliminary charge of murder after a shooting at 6:13 p.m. Thursday in the area of 15000 N. Bluff Road.

Deputies arrested Damion Bryant, 20, Edinburgh, who was identified as the shooter and interviewed by detectives before being taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, investigators said.

Although investigators released view details about the circumstances of the shooting, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dane Duke said detectives were categorizing it as a “family dispute or disturbance.”

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, investigators said.

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s office identified the victim as 49-year-old Wayne E. McGeorge, Edinburgh. Cause and manner of death is pending an autopsy, according to the coroner’s office.

Responding personnel from German Township Fire Department and Columbus Regional Hospital EMS administered medical aid, however the victim was later pronounced deceased at Columbus Regional Hospital.

There were multiple firearm-related incidents in the Bartholomew County and Columbus community on Thanksgiving day, said Sheriff Matt Myers.

“The community had three firearm-related events on Thanksgiving Day alone. Law enforcement as a whole takes gun violence very seriously and we are no different here at your sheriff’s office. We will work diligently to bring those who commit violence against members of our community to justice,” Myers said.

Assisting in the shooting investigation were the Edinburgh Police Department, detectives from the Columbus Police Department, German Township Fire Department and Columbus Regional Hospital EMS.
