Richard Clayton Helt

Richard Clayton Helt, 88, of Columbus, formerly of Jennings County passed away on Tuesday November 22, 2022 at his home.

Born on April 21, 1934 in Jennings County, he was the son of Paul “Pert” Helt and Thelma “Sally” McClure Helt. He married Winifred “Winnie” Miller Andrews on December 19, 1980 and she survives.

Before retirement Richard was a fuel system inspector at Cummins Engine Company and a farmer. After retirement he was employed at Burkman Construction.

Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1956 – 1958 and was stationed in Germany.

He is a member of the Elizabethtown United Methodist Church, the Reddington Rear Wheelers Tractor Club and the American Legion.

He enjoyed tractors, working, gardening, flowers and dreamed of working for the WPA.

Richard dearly loved his little dog Sophie.

Survivors include his wife, Winnie of Columbus; children, Randall “Randy” Helt of Indianapolis, Angela “Angie” (Terry) Pate of O’Fallon, IL, Karen (Kim) Conover of Waldron and Andrea “Andi” (Scott) Roberts of Mooresville; grandchildren, Danny Pate, Christina Pate, Steve (Kristi) Pate and Madi Roberts; great grandchildren, Axel Conover, Reese Pate, Elliott Pate and Ryker Wagner; brother, Gerald (Judy) Helt of Scipio.

The funeral for Richard will be on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Pastor Bob Lay officiating. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the funeral home on Tuesday. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery with a military graveside service performed by the Bartholomew County Veteran Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be donated to Elizabethtown United Methodist Church, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Bartholomew County Humane Society.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Dustin Conover.
