Services and studies

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. J.A.M. (children’s church) is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday School Classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. On Sunday, Dec. 18, the church will gather together in the contemporary worship center to celebrate in a Christmas party worship experience at 9:30 a.m. Please join us after the service to enjoy cookies, coffee, and eggnog. There will be no J.A.M. or Sunday School on this day.

Asbury invites you to a special service designed for those who may be experiencing grief and loss during the holidays. Please join us on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary for Blue Christmas, as we share in this special time of healing.

Christmas Eve Eve Candlelight Contemporary Service will be held on Friday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. in the contemporary worship center. This will be an upbeat service that will include candlelight and communion.

Please make plans to join the church for a special Christmas Eve Service on Dec. 24. The church will begin with an organ Christmas recital at 6:30 p.m. followed by our traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 7 p.m.

Christmas Day will be celebrated with an online service only.

Every Thursday when school is in full-day session, a $4 taco/chicken lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with Pit Stop (Taco Church) Lunch.

Columbus Baptist Church — The church offers worship services on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A teen service is offered at 6:30 p.m. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study, Kids Club and teens meet at 6:30 p.m. There are various small group events weekly.

Community Church of Columbus — Community Church of Columbus meets for Sunday service at 9 and 10:30 a.m. The second service is livestreamed and available on the Community Church’s Columbus Indiana Facebook page and Community Church of Columbus YouTube channel.

East Columbus Christian Church — East Columbus Christian Church is open for in-person worship on Sunday mornings with a blended worship service at 10 a.m. The church also has online worship available through Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday morning Bible study is at 9 a.m. Youth meet at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and children’s ministry meets through Zoom on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Pastor Jongmin Lee will bring the message at the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Our young children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school is held immediately after the morning service, and classes are available for all ages and Bible interests. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.

A free hot meal will be served the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Youth Center Building. All are welcome to come.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church is now open for in-person service at 9:30 a.m. If you would like to join on Zoom, please email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is Dec. 20 and the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in-person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday evening worship (masks optional) is offered at 6:30 p.m. each week. The congregation also livestreams a daily devotion and prayer Monday through Thursday at 7 a.m. on the Facebook page.

Preschool classes continue and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Christian Church — The church is offering services in person and online at 9 and 10:30 a.m. FCC Kids is at 10:30 a.m. and FCC Teens is at 9 a.m.

The church will be having only one service at 10 a.m. on Sundays, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

First Lutheran Church — The church offers in-person worship on Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. for the classic service and 11:15 a.m. for the casual service. Livestreaming of both services can be accessed on the church’s YouTube page.

The church is partnering with Sans Souci to put shoes on the feet of as many children as possible through its “Soles for Santa” campaign. They will be collecting shoes in any style and any size (no sandals or snow boots, please) for distribution to children in need. There will be two community drop-off opportunities at the church on Saturday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon both days.

First Presbyterian Church — Dec. 4 is the Second Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Hope. This communion worship will focus on Isaiah 54:1-8 and Luke 1:5-17, 24-25, with a sermon titled “We Wait and Respond.” The Sanctuary Choir will lead worship. The church will have a 9:30 a.m. worship in person in the sanctuary (you may wear a mask) or on Facebook, Zoom or YouTube. For more details, please refer to our website: www.fpccolumbus.org.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to our hot meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (Please enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.) We are an LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “From Generation to Generation: God Meets Us in Our Fear.” The scripture will be Luke 1:26-38.

The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances to the sanctuary. Masks are optional. Childcare will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page, and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, the church will have Santa’s Workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Bring your kids and grandkids for a fun time to participate in various activities and make crafts that could become gifts for family members this Christmas. On Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m., the church will have its Blue Christmas Service. This special service is for those who may be grieving or have a heaviness of heart during the holiday season. Join us for remembrance and reflection through music, words of comfort and shared acts of compassion.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, the church will host a Blood Drive in Fellowship Hall from noon to 5 p.m. Go to www.redcrossblood.org to register to donate.

The church will again have three options to worship on Christmas Eve: a family service at 6 p.m., a jazz service at 8:30 p.m., and a lessons and carols service at 11 p.m.

Flintwood Wesleyan Church — Sunday morning worship begins at 9 a.m. with the Amplify (contemporary) service. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. The Well (traditional) service begins at 11 a.m. Both worship services are led by Pastor Wesley Jones. The church’s Sunday Amplify services are livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Wednesday activities begin with a meal served at 5:30 p.m. in the friendship center. The iKids program begins at 6:15 p.m. and youth meet downstairs in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Prayer team meets in the prayer room downstairs in the main building at 6:15 p.m., and adult Bible study meets at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Scouts meet Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Garden City Christian Church — Sunday School classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. Join the 10 a.m. worship service as Pastor Brian Gilroy shows how God continues to show His love and promises to never leave or forsake us, in a special Christmas sermon series, “God With Us.”

On Christmas morning at 11 a.m., join the church at a special Christmas worship service.

If you are a caregiver, join the church’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month, from 4:30 until 6 p.m.

Wednesday evening youth group, led by interim youth minister Ryan Croft, runs from 6 to 8 p.m. for grades 6-12. Trail Life Troop IN-0110 meets twice monthly on Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

Memorial Baptist Church — The church is offering in-person and online worship services at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school is offered online at 10:45 a.m. Online services are via Facebook and YouTube.

During this Advent season, on Sunday, Dec. 4, the church will present the Christmas Cantata “All is Well” that will be performed during the worship service. On Sunday, Dec. 11, join the church for the youth and children’s Christmas program “Sheep in Heavenly Peace” that will be presented during the worship service. On Sunday, Dec. 18, the topic for the sermon will be “Christmas Joy.” On Saturday, Dec. 24, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a Christmas Eve service. All are welcome. On Sunday, Dec. 25, there will be a “Happy Birthday, Jesus!” Worship Celebration.

Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church — The church invites the community to visit their little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books.

Newbern United Methodist Church — The church is practicing strict COVID-19 preventative measures. Masks are required. All activities are postponed until further notice except for Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. and online Bible study each Wednesday at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Pastor Al White, the church’s transitional pastor, is leading worship and sharing messages that encourage firm foundations of faith in Jesus. Simple church — simply Jesus.

The church has added a time for discipleship growth at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings. There’s always a coffee and donut time downstairs before the morning worship time at 10 a.m.

Petersville United Methodist Church — Pastor Rebecca Milne will bring her message, “Sacred People,” the second Sunday of Advent, Dec. 4, at the 9 a.m. service. Scriptures will be from Romans 15:4-13 and Matthew 3:1-12. She will emphasize that our world is crying out for harmony and being able to see the Christ reflected in each other makes a path for this to be accomplished.

Kathy Bush will serve as worship and song leader, and Teresa Covert will share a message with the children.

There will be a “Kid’s Fun Day” on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church; children will experience crafts, a movie, lunch and more. Attendees must register on the Petersville United Methodist Church’s Facebook Page.

On Sunday, Dec. 11, those attending worship are encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas outfit, especially those that feature lots of sparkles and bling! Also on that Sunday, the United Women of Faith (UMW) will be having a bake sale for the benefit of Clifty Creek Elementary School and the Lucille Raines Residence in Indianapolis that houses people who are in recovery from chemical dependency; it is supported solely by Indiana’s United Methodist Women of Faith. Anyone may donate baked items. Also, there will be a hat and mitten tree in the Narthex for donations to the Clifty Creek School.

A Christmas Eve Candlelight service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the church. On Christmas Day, there will be a casual worship service at 9:30 a.m.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — Sandy Hook United Methodist Church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. The church will offer two services on Sunday, Dec. 4 — the traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and the contemporary service at 11 a.m. This is the second Sunday of Advent. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring a message about “Nothing is Impossible: #morehope” as part of the sermon series, “Angels Among Us.”

Nursery is available for children 2 and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of second service. Sunday school is offered for all ages between the two services.

Blue Christmas service will be on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. Christmas Eve service will be Saturday, Dec. 24, at 6 p.m. Christmas Day will be online service only.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — An Advent Service of Song will be celebrated Sunday with Pastor Jeff Patterson presenting the message, “True Hope” Sunday at the 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. worship services.

Christian Educational classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m. Cheryl LaBelle will lead a small Bible class entitled “Simple Habits for Effective Parenting” in the Conference Room and Pastor Bauman will lead Bible study entitled, “God’s Plan – Your Purpose” in the Fellowship Room. The Spanish worship service will be in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m. with Convivio (Life Together) at 12 noon.

A midweek Advent service will be held Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. with Pastor Bauman presenting the message “O Come, Lord of Might”.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on WYGS 91.1 FM, which also broadcasts the Lutheran Hour every Sunday at 7 p.m.

The Wednesday morning adult Bible class will meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Gospel of John. All are welcome.

South Central Indiana Christian Men’s Fellowship — Hilltop Christian Camp will host the December SCICMF meeting at the camp in Brown County on the first Tuesday, Dec. 6. The meal will be at 6:30 p.m. and include spaghetti, salad, rolls, dessert and drinks. The meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m.

Eric Scheidt, assistant manager at the camp, will be the speaker. (Business will include an election for vice president and secretary.)
