Samuel John Stewart succumbed to a lifelong battle with congenital heart disease on Monday, December 5, 2022. He recently underwent a successful sixth heart valve replacement at Mayo Clinic, Rochester on November 10. Unfortunately, the replacement could not correct the damage that his body endured from his faulty heart. On Monday, November 28, he was flown home on Mayo One to Freeman Field to live out his final days at home surrounded by family and friends.

Born October 2, 1954, in Seymour, Sam was the sixth of nine children born to Thomas and Mary Catherine (Kay) Stewart. He was married to the former, Billie S. Anderson, for 46 years. They were married on June 25, 1976, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour.

Sam attended St. Ambrose Catholic School from Grades 1-8. He would attend and graduate from Seymour High School in 1973. In 1977, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Franklin College. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Upon his graduation, Sam joined his father in employment at Stewart’s LP Gas. He and his brother, Tom, would acquire the business in 1983, becoming second generation owners of the business. After his brother’s retirement, Ben Stewart would purchase his portion of the business. Sam and his son, Ben, continued to co-own the business until his retirement in 2017. It was with great pride to Sam that his son would continue the business as a third generation proprietor.

Sam was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus (Seymour Msgr-Rawlinson Co 1252) in the third degree. He was a former member of the Indiana Realtor’s Association and a member of the Indiana Propane Association and the National Propane Association.

He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with friends near and far, random lunch or breakfast outings with friends. practicing his shooting skills at a gun range, fishing, and camping.

Sam is survived by his wife, Billie, and three children. They are son, Ben (Kim) Stewart, Seymour and daughters, Ashleigh (Chris Vaughan) Stewart of Park City, Utah and Kara (Chad) Schneider of Cincinnati, Ohio and five grandchildren; Sydney Stewart, Avery Stewart, Charlie Stewart, Ava Schneider, and Brixton Schneider. Also, surviving are five siblings; four sisters and one brother. They are Sally (Bob) Mogle, Sebring, Florida; Mary Jane (John) Prewitt, Ft. Myers, Florida; Anne Marie (Lou) Goss, Muncie; Sharon (Scott) Burger, Columbus; and Steve (Brandy) Stewart, Largo, Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter (Brianna Stewart), a sister (Risa Stewart), and two brothers (Robert Stewart and Thomas Stewart).

The visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a rosary service beginning at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Voss &Sons Funeral Home, 316 N. Chestnut St., Seymour, 47274. There will be a second visitation from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2022, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 325 S. Chestnut St., Seymour, 47274. The funeral mass will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Burial in Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Sam’s name may be gifted to Schneck Hospice, St. Ambrose Catholic Church &School, or the American Heart Association.
