City employee honored for helping save a life

Columbus Animal Care Services Operations Manager Christopher McDaniel has received a Life Saving Award for intervening in a medical emergency involving a fellow employee.

Columbus Fire Chief Andy Lay presented McDaniel with the award at Tuesday’s Columbus Board of Works meeting.

“On Oct. 25, 2022, Officer Chris McDaniel from Animal Care Services was responding to an animal care investigation, when Officer Neil Lapidus from Animal Care Services experienced a medical emergency,” said Lay. “Quick actions by Officer McDaniel of calling 911 and performing CPR contributed to saving the life of Officer Lapidus. So Officer McDaniel’s selfless, courageous and outstanding efforts are to be commended.”

Lay added that CFD Deputy Chief Mike Kutkso provided CPR training to several other departments within the city, and he believes this also contributed to saving Lapidus.
