COLUMBUS, Ind. — A family of four was displaced after a Christmas morning residential fire at 4:04 a.m. Sunday.

Columbus firefighters were called to 4678 Bayview Drive for a report of a fire in the home. They found smoke and flames coming from the residence but also were told the family of four had escaped the home and were awaiting the arrival of firefighters in a neighboring home. The family members were assessed for smoke inhalation at the scene but all members declined transport.

Operating in extremely cold temperatures, firefighters battled the blaze for approximately 45 minutes. Damage to the home was extensive. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The displaced family told firefighters they will be staying at a family member’s home. Firefighters worked with the family to identify needed items located inside the home. Crews searched the home and retrieved several items immediately after the fire. Crews returned to the scene a few hours later to attempt to locate additional items for the family.

Disaster services are being provided by the American Red Cross. Agencies that assisted at the scene include the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health Emergency Medical Services, Columbus City Utilities, Duke Energy and CenterPoint Energy. No damage estimate is available at this time.
