Franciscan promotes Callaghan to senior VP

MISHAWAKA — Dr. James Callaghan has been named senior vice president and chief operating officer for Franciscan Alliance, effective today.

He has served as president and chief executive officer for Franciscan Health Central Indiana Division since July 2015. In that role, he oversaw operations at hospitals in Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel. Those facilities are part of Franciscan Alliance, which operates 12 hospitals throughout Indiana and south suburban Chicago.

During the past seven years, Callaghan has led and been involved in initiatives such as the establishment of Franciscan Health Orthopedic Hospital Carmel, Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing, Franciscan CityWay complexes in Downtown Indianapolis, and the renovation of the Center for Women & Children, and completion of Franciscan Hospice House on the Indianapolis campus.

Prior to his Central Indiana appointment, Callaghan served as president of Franciscan Health Michigan City, where he held other leadership roles such as chief operating officer, vice president of medical affairs and other key clinical and administrative appointments.

Callaghan received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed an internal medicine internship at Northwestern University School of Medicine. Following that, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon, including an assignment as flight surgeon with the prestigious “Thunderbirds” air demonstration team.

After his military service, he completed training with Franciscan Health’s family medicine residency program. He later earned a master’s of business administration from Purdue University.
