Slow start dooms Hauser girls in loss to Austin

HOPE — Tuesday night’s girls basketball game between Hauser and Austin is one the Jets want to erase from their memory in a hurry.

Hauser trailed by double digits early in the contest and never recovered in a 61-33 loss.

“It’s been one of things we been talking about — starting fast, and we didn’t start fast tonight,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “We had to use timeouts early in the game. We couldn’t find a bucket. Going forward, it’ll be one of the things we’ll focus on.”

The first quarter slipped away from the Jets (9-8) quick. They had missed assignments on defense, and didn’t execute well on offense with several missed shots and turnovers.

Hauser found itself trailing 9-2 early with 4:53 left. Shipp called a timeout to attempt to get his team regrouped. It didn’t work as the Eagles (12-8) went on a 10-2 run that was capped off with a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead 20-4.

Things didn’t get any better for the Jets to start the second quarter when Austin extended the lead to 27-6 following a 7-2 run. The Eagles would take a 32-7 lead heading into the locker room at the half.

The third quarter was much better for Hauser, which got itself some layups in transition and a Norah Berkenstock layup at the buzzer, but couldn’t make up any ground on Austin and trailed 45-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bella Kipls, Adrianna Musillami and Madelyn Poe all scored eight points to lead the Jets. Berkenstock added seven.

The next two games will be key for the Jets in the next seven days as they control their own destiny for the Mid-Hoosier conference crown. They’ll travel to Morristown for a big conference game on Thursday, then host North Decatur in another conference game on Tuesday. The game against Browstown Central that was scheduled for Friday has been canceled.

“One of our big focuses is the Mid-Hoosier Conference,” Shipp said W”e’re 4-0 in the Mid-Hoosier Conference. Now, we play two back-to-back games. Our No. 1 focus and number one goal is the conference, and we’re still in the same position that we were in since December. The thing we have to do is come back with a great attitude and great effort (today) in practice… We’re here to get better and make ourself better.”
