Verda Ann Marshall Ruddick

Verda Ann Ruddick, 87, of Seymour, passed away with her husband of 67 years by her side, on Jan. 13, 2023, at the Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour. She was born on her parent’s farm north of Hayden on Aug. 13, 1935, the daughter of Gerald and Elizabeth Layman Marshall.

Verda attended the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church until her family moved to Hayden in 1947. She helped her parents with Marshall’s Station, the gas station and diner in Hayden, until she graduated from high school.

After moving to Hayden, she began attending the Hayden Methodist Church and that is where she was a member at the time of her death. While at the church, she taught Sunday School, was a leader of the youth group, and played piano.

Verda was active with the Hayden 4-H Club, and she was named the Jennings County 4-H queen in 1951.

She attended school at Hayden where she graduated with the Class of 1953. After high school, she was employed at the Jefferson Proving Ground as an office worker. She married William D. Ruddick on May 1, 1955, at the Hayden Methodist Church. She left her job when she was ready to start a family. She had a son, Rodger, and two daughters, Jill and Julia.

The family moved from Spencer Township to a farm at Reddington in 1964. She was content to be a farm wife until she got the opportunity to work as an assistant teacher at the Sunshine School in Seymour. After she left that job, she worked at the Social Security Administration office in Columbus until she retired.

She had been a member of the Red Hatters Club from Reddington and she was a member of the Hayden Historical Museum.

Survivors include her husband Bill, son, Rodger Ruddick; daughters, Jill (Mike) McGrew and Julie (Bill) Klaes. Grandchildren, Erin (Leonard) Collett, Spencer (Shantell) Ruddick, Rae Winters (Ryan McClain), Alison Winters (Patrick Wu), Steve (Priscillla) McGrew, Mackenzie (Nick) Eddy, Mia (Jacob) McCall. Great grandchildren Peyton and Haley Collett, Kashton Ruddick, William McClain, Conrad, Maverick, and London Eddy, and Zion and Israel McCall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Cecil, Warren, Arnold, Gerald Jr., and Robert ‘Jake’ Marshall and one grandson, Jonathan McGrew.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2022, at 11am at Voss &Sons Funeral Home. A visitation will be held at Voss &Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 4pm-8pm and Thursday, January 19, 2023, from 10am until the time of service. She will be laid to rest at the Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.
