FRANKLIN — Police are still investigating the death of an Indianapolis man found shot on Interstate 65 in Franklin Thursday morning.
Derrick Allen Janney, 23, was found by police with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound along I-65 southbound near the 91 mile-marker north of the Franklin exit.
The manner of Janney’s death has not yet been determined, but Indiana State Police are preliminarily saying the death may not be a homicide, ISP spokesperson Sgt. John Perrine said in a tweet sent Thursday morning following the incident.
The Johnson County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy of Janney on Friday.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, ISP, the coroner’s office and various local police and fire agencies responded to the scene when they received the emergency call before around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
The right southbound lane of I-65 near the Franklin exit remained blocked throughout the late morning and into the afternoon, but was reopened before 1 p.m., according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Because the incident occurred on the interstate, state police are serving as the lead investigators.
