Ethel A. Parmer

Ethel A. Parmer, 98, of Columbus, passed away on January 27, 2023.

Ethel was born January 21, 1925, in Decatur County, the Daughter of William and Elizabeth Barg Westerfeld. On December 13, 1942, she married the man who would be by her side for the rest of their lives, Hoyt Douglas Parmer.

Ethel was previously a member of St. George Lutheran Church in Edinburgh where she sang in the choir. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed playing bridge, and traveling with her husband. They visited many locations throughout the United States as well as several other countries. Most of all, Ethel loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Ethel and Hoyt were blessed with two children. Michael (Mary) Parmer of Traverse City, Michigan, and Nancy Smith of North Vernon; grandchildren Dawn Bowers, Aaron Smith, Matthew Parmer, and Nicholas Parmer; great-grandchildren Isaac and Olivia Bowers, Merlin Smith, as well as Francis and Florence Parmer.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Hoyt on March 3, 2018; her son-in-law Gary Smith; brothers Clarence, Raymond, Monroe, William, and Howard Westerfeld; as well as two sisters Mable Bauer and Evelyn Parmer.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2023, at the Jewell – Rittman Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday. Ethel will be laid to rest next to her husband during a private ceremony at the Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum.
